The Usual Suspects

Miss Venezuela & Miss USA

Before I go into my dissection of this year’s preliminaries I just felt the need to say some things about two of the usual suspects who almost always end up on our favorites list. Two girls who, by the reputation that precedes them, make other candidates uneasy. Two girls who, by their sashes alone, make us pay attention (maybe too much even). It is for this reason also that I have patiently kept looking at them. Unfortunately till now, I am unconvinced that they deserve to go any further, even with 20 slots this year.

Right on top of that list is Venezuela. I don’t want to be mean because I am not, but I personally think that Jictzad doesn’t have what it takes to make the cut this year. Her features are way too strong (short of saying too manly) and she hasn’t really made an impact at this pageant. Which is a pity because Venezuela has always sent such beautiful and well-prepared delegates.

In fact, records show that in the 55 years of the pageant’s colorful history, Venezuela has made the semis 33 times – that’s 60% of the time. Only one country has done better, the USA with only 5 delegates NOT making it to the semis – ever.
This would have been one of those rare years, if only the competition wasn’t being held in the United States. That’s because although she has a very lovely face, I personally believe this year’s Miss USA didn’t do as well as the 20 plus bombshells who really “competed” last night. During the preliminaries Elizabeth’s performance was lackluster, he gown ill fitting made her body proportions look weird. Her height is also a big problem. Anyway with 20 slots instead of 10 or 15 and a panel of judges which is primarily American there’s no way she won’t make it.

The beauty of having twenty names is giving more girls a chance to have their try during pageant night. And although we have strong contenders from other powerhouses like Puerto Rico and Mexico, I’d love it this year if we had some fresh new names we haven’t heard called before like Ethiopia or St. Lucia, or names we haven’t heard in a while like Nicaragua or Sri Lanka (both countries have only reached the semis once). And though I doubt it highly, I’ve been dreaming of the day the crown goes back to Asia.

I always have terrible trouble with comment-related plugins that require me to put some line in the comment loop; I can never seem to find the right spot. Can anyone tell me where I should put the php line in my comments loop? I haven not modified anything much, and I would be very grateful. Thanks!
