GLOBE TELECOMMUNICATIONS TO SELL IPHONE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Apparently in preparation for Apple’s 3G iPhone announcement next month, more telecommunications companies around the globe are announcing deals with Apple to sell the iPhone in their respective countries. Till this weekend, South East Asia has pretty much been left off the map.

Today however Globe telecommunications, one of the top-two telcos in the Philippines posted this short announcement on their website:

Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus to bring iPhone to the region

Manila, 12 May 2008 – Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to the Philippines, Singapore, India, and Australia later this year.

More information will be released at a later date.

A very reliable source inside Globe has confirmed this via SMS but asked not to be named. Apparently this is all they are able to say at the moment.

From the news release it appears SingTel will be selling the iPhone in Singapore. Bharti in India and Optus in Australia.

UPDATE: The same Globe source says that the iPhone might be available as early as September and that it will have new features that will benefit the text savvy Philippine market.
